Influence of the sun and the moon on the planet
Moon phases are one of the things that effect Earth. As it shows on the picture at the top, the first week begins with a New Moon. The position of the Sun creates a moon that can not be seen. Than later in the week, the Moon gets bigger or waxes and creates a crescent. In the second week, the moon will appear as a semi circle, called First Quarter. By the beginning of the third week, the whole Moon is visible because the position of the Sun; but then it turns into a waning gibbous. Gibbous means to get smaller. When is it the fourth week, it turns into a Third Quarter; the opposite side of the First Quarter. That is when half the Moon can be seen. Near the end of the fourth week, it turns into a skinny waning gibbous.
This happens over and over again.
An eclipse is when shadows make the sun or moon grow dark. The two kinds of eclipses are Lunar and Solar. During a Lunar eclipse, the Moon cannot be seen at all because it is behind the Earth and the Sun. A Solar Eclipse is when the Moon, Sun and the Earth are in a straight line.
